Bio-Inspired Navigation and Crossing the Reality Gap

November 08 @ 18:00 Free

Dexter Shepherd is a doctoral candidate in bio-inspired Artificial Intelligence. His research is in insect-inspired mechanisms to improve robot navigation and locomotion. Within his undergraduate project he developed a robot that used whegs, a form of wheel-leg hybrid on a robot that evolved in simulation and used low-resolution real-world sensing to match simulation. This paper was published and presented at the UK Robotics and Autonomous Systems Conference in Aberystwyth where it received the best paper award and was invited to be presented at Oxford. He now works on using chaotic dynamics for motor control in hexapod robots to improve robotic locomotion.

This talk will be about insect-inspired robotics and how simulation to real-world had successes using noise reduction of the real world.

This will be a hybrid event, available to attend both online and in person. See website for online link

This talk is organised and hosted by students (Data Science Society) on the University of Sussex campus!
