New Internationalist: Whose railway is it anyway?

October 19 @ 18:00 Free

With new high-speed lines planned for every continent, the world is experiencing a railway renaissance. But once again, railways are being built to serve the capitalist and imperialist interests which fuelled their development in the nineteenth century. High rail fares keep passengers on the roads and in the skies, and the pursuit of profit is threatening jobs, pay and conditions for railway workers. Amid a climate emergency and persistent global inequalities, how can we instead build railways to serve the people?

Join us to launch the September-October issue of New Internationalist, which takes us on a railway adventure through nineteenth century hypercapitalism, cross-continental industrial unrest, imperialism and anti-imperialism in Tanzania and Moldova’s entry to the 2022 Eurovision song contest. We’ll discuss the state of our railways, and how we can fight back.

Speakers include:

Simon Weller, ASLEF assistant general secretary

Mel Taylor, TSSA organizer

Conrad Landin, New Internationalist co-editor

RMT representative (TBC)
