The discovery of an abandoned dinghy floating in the sea off Shoreham on Monday afternoon sparked a huge search for its occupants, bringing together several RNLI lifeboats and the Coastguard helicopter.
At around 5pm on Monday afternoon, the body of a man was found in the water off Hove by the Shoreham RNLI lifeboat.
He has been identified as 51-year-old Harry Garrood, from Brighton.
During enquiries to identify Mr Garrood, emergency services realised his friend was also missing and the search continued into the evening and restarted early on Tuesday morning.
At around 8.45am on Tuesday, a second body was spotted by the crew of a Coastguard helicopter in the water near Shoreham Beach and was recovered by the Shoreham RNLI lifeboat.
He has been identified by police as Matthew Stoneley, 46, also from Brighton.
