Blakers Park, Brighton

Blakers Park

Blakers Park is a much-loved community park in the Fiveways area of Brighton, offering a peaceful green space where visitors can enjoy a walk, relax with a coffee, play tennis or bring the family for some outdoor fun.

Although smaller than some of Brighton's better-known parks, Blakers Park has plenty to offer. Its open lawns, mature trees, children's playground, tennis courts and friendly café make it a popular spot with local residents and visitors alike.

One of the park's most recognisable features is its distinctive Victorian clock tower, which stands at the heart of the park and gives Blakers Park much of its character.

Things to Do at Blakers Park
Explore the Victorian Clock Tower

The Victorian clock tower is the centrepiece of Blakers Park and one of its most unusual features. Standing around 50 feet high, the tower was unveiled in September 1896 after being donated by Alderman John George Blaker. It was designed as a distinctive landmark for the park and remains a focal point today.

The clock tower provides an excellent backdrop for photographs and is one of the features that makes Blakers Park different from many other green spaces in Brighton.

Children's Playground

Blakers Park has a popular children's playground at the southern end of the park. The playground was redeveloped in 2021 and includes a range of modern play equipment, with separate areas for younger and older children. Much of the equipment is wheelchair accessible.

With open grass areas nearby, it is a great place for families to spend some time outdoors.

Tennis at Blakers Park

The park has two outdoor tennis courts, offering visitors the opportunity to play tennis in a relaxed park setting. The courts are managed through the local park tennis facilities and can be booked for play.

Whether you're an experienced player or simply looking for an active way to enjoy the outdoors, the tennis courts are a useful addition to the park.

Enjoy a Coffee at the Café

Blakers Park has a small, friendly café where visitors can stop for refreshments while enjoying the park. It is particularly convenient for families visiting the playground or anyone wanting to take a break during a walk.

Grab a coffee, find a bench and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this popular neighbourhood park.

Walking and Relaxing

Blakers Park is ideal for a leisurely stroll. Paths wind through the park, with mature trees and planted areas creating a pleasant setting.

The park slopes gently and offers open views towards Brighton, while benches around the park provide plenty of opportunities to sit and enjoy the surroundings.

It is also a popular place for local dog walkers and residents looking for somewhere green close to home.

Blakers Park Bluebell Wood

The north-west corner of the park includes a small area known as Bluebell Wood. English bluebells were planted by local volunteers in 2010, creating a colourful display among the trees each spring.

Spring is therefore a particularly attractive time to visit this part of the park.

A Park With History

Blakers Park has a fascinating connection with the history of Brighton. Alderman John George Blaker gifted the land to the people of Brighton in 1893, with the park opening to the public in November 1894.

The original park design included winding paths and planted boundaries, and much of its historic character remains today. The clock tower was added in 1896, while tennis courts were introduced during the 1930s.

Today, Blakers Park remains an important community green space within the Preston Park Conservation Area.

Blakers Park Events and Community Activities

Blakers Park has a strong community atmosphere, with local volunteers helping to care for and improve the park. The Blakers Park Gardening Group meets regularly, while local organisations and community groups also use the park throughout the year.
