New One-Woman Comedy Play Wummy Comes to Brighton Fringe — Manifesting Money, Marriage & Motherhood… What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
“I shouldn’t be here. I should be in SW3, midweek lunching.”
BBC-featured actress Charis King brings her laugh-out-loud one-woman play Wummy to preview at Brighton Fringe before heading on to Edinburgh Fringe. Wummy is a whirlwind comedy about one woman’s relentless attempts to manifest a life as a yummy mummy.
ABOUT THE SHOW: Wummy is broke, flat-sharing, and craving luxury. Her dream? “A Chelsea townhouse, a husband, a baby, a nanny, and—most importantly—a bin hidden within a kitchen island.” But when she tries to manifest her dream life, the universe answers her with an unexpected bump in the road…
With character comedy, physical theatre, and audience interaction, Wummy skewers modern aspirations, millennial anxieties, and the internet’s obsession with manifestation. Inspired by Charis’ own experiences of moonlighting as an actress while teaching, living in a property guardianship with 94 strangers, and even sleeping in a converted police cell, the show speaks to an entire generation caught between their economic reality and their Pinterest board fantasies.
For anyone who’s ever said ‘this isn’t the life I ordered’.
Wummy takes a brutally funny look at the absurdities of modern ambition and the fine line between manifesting and delusion.
MEET THE TEAM: Written and performed by Charis King (BBC Radio, Grannadvice, BBC Upload Festival). Direction and dramaturgy by Octavia Gilmore, (Impromptu Shakespeare, When The Screaming Starts).
Wummy promises to be a fast-paced hour of comedy. As Sophie Winkleman (Peep Show) puts it: “I would pay to watch Charis drink a cup of tea – let alone perform a show.”
